Myths & Facts: The science of how we die

What happens when your body is dying – and what comes after? Nurse Practitioner and MAID clinician Valerie Cooper joined us to guide us through the biological, cognitive, and psychological changes that occur in the final stages of life. She also tackled some of the most frequent myths about death, offering clarity and comfort on a topic that is too often shrouded in fear and uncertainty. This session is is a useful resource for anyone who wishes to better understand and support their loved ones through their final journey – or be better prepared for their own death in the future.  

Valerie Cooper is a Hospice Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner with extensive experience in intensive care, pain management, and palliative care. She holds a Master of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner – Adult certification from the University of Toronto and has worked in critical care, cardiac surgery, and emergency medicine. Currently with Ontario Health atHome, she is certified in Hospice Palliative Care Nursing and actively contributes to education at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as continuing education for nurse practitioners. Valerie is also involved in multiple Communities of Practice focused on palliative and end-of-life care, including medical assistance in dying, and currently serves on the DWDC Clinicians Advisory Council.
