How to access assisted dying in the Ottawa region

A summary of the MAID process and what resources are available in the Ottawa region.

DWDC's Shine a Light access map was put together by volunteers all over Canada to find out what policies exist in facilities, if any. Listed below are some hospitals, hospices, and long-term care homes in the west, central, east and south areas of Ottawa:

Ottawa West

Carlingview Manor

Is assisted dying allowed? Yes
Revera, the company that manages this facility, says assisted dying is allowed at all of its long-term care homes across Canada.

Assisted dying is allowed on-site, according to the City of Ottawa, which manages the facility. However, the City has yet to approve a finalized assisted dying policy for its long-term care facilities.

Queensway-Carleton has passed a policy allowing medical assistance in dying on-site.

A leading palliative care facility in Ottawa, Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital has repeated said it would not allow assisted dying on-site. A number of media stories have been written about the hospital's position.

Montclair Hospital does not have a finalized policy on assisted dying. Correspondence with hospital seems to suggest that patients are or will be allowed to access assisted dying on-site.

Management says eligible residents will be allowed to access assisted dying on-site. However, they have not issued policies outlining protocols for medical assistance in dying.
