Looking Ahead: MAID and what you should know going into 2023

On December 14, we sat down with DWDC CEO Helen Long and Dr. Gord Gubitz, the Clinical Lead for the MAID Program in Nova Scotia.

This session provided a review of the developments in the end-of-life rights movement for 2022 and what to expect moving forward into 2023.

We also heard from Dr. Gubitz on the development of the upcoming Canadian MAID education curriculum, the growing need for such education, and the changes to their practice that clinicians are expecting for 2023.

Please note: On February 2, 2023, legislation was introduced to extend the sunset clause on MAID for mental disorders until March 17, 2024.

Helen Long is the CEO of Dying With Dignity Canada.

Dr. Gord Gubitz became involved with medical assistance in dying (MAID) shortly after federal legislation was passed that legalized MAID in Canada in 2016. He is the Clinical Lead for the MAID Program in Nova Scotia and does assessments and provisions for eligible Nova Scotians.
