We know Advance Care Planning matters. But why do so many of us struggle to get across the finish line and complete our Advance Care Directives? When we asked folks that had recently requested a DWDC kit, 81% said they had not completed their Advance Care Directive, citing reasons such as a lack of time, feeling like they didn’t need to prioritize it, or being afraid to start what can be an emotional conversation.

Dianne Godkin, PhD, is the Director of the Regional Ethics Program at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga, Ontario. She has worked as a practicing health care ethicist for more than 20 years; prior to that she worked as a registered nurse in a variety of clinical and educational settings. Her education includes a doctoral degree in nursing from the University of Alberta and a post-graduate clinical ethics fellowship from the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics. She is an adjunct lecturer with the Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto and an Investigator with the Institute for Better Health. Her research interests include the use of qualitative methods to explore end-of-life decision-making, medical assistance in dying, and advance care planning. When not working, Dianne enjoys singing with the Festival Sounds Chorus in Stratford, Ontario, where she now lives with her two adolescent and very entertaining cats, Luna and Astra.
