The facts on Bill 18: What we know about the proposed legislation

On Wednesday, March 18th, 2026, the Alberta government tabled Bill 18: Safeguards for Last Resort Termination of Life Act. If passed, this legislation would introduce new barriers to medical assistance in dying (MAID). These restrictions would include forbidding health care providers to raise MAID unless a patient brings it up, a complete ban on Track 2 MAID and a narrowing of the definition of reasonably foreseeable natural death to those who have a life expectancy of 12 months or less, among other limitations. In this critical session, Edmonton Chapter Chair Karen Kerr unpacked the facts on Bill 18.
