Champions of change: How to effectively meet with your MP

Ready to make your voice heard on end-of-life choice? In this session, we explored the DWDC Advocacy Toolkit and Action Guide, designed to help you feel confident and prepared for your own meetings with elected officials.

Helen Long has a long track record of informed engagement and empowering leadership in the not-for-profit, health and wellness sector with a strong focus on advocacy, public relations and organizational excellence.

Chris Jones  has worked in the Government Relations field for over 20 years, as a senior manager and Executive Director of a number of not-for-profit and for-profit associations. He has extensive federal policy, advocacy, and public affairs experience in a variety of sectors. He also spent nearly four years on Parliament Hill advising various politicians, including two cabinet ministers and a leader of an opposition party. Through this work, and time spent helping the food-insecure in his community, he has developed an understanding of the vulnerability which many Canadians experience in their lives.

Alex Muir has been a volunteer with the Metro Vancouver Chapter of Dying With Dignity Canada since 2017, starting as an Independent Witness for individuals requesting medical assistance in dying (MAID) and then assuming the Witness Coordinator role. Alex became chair of the Metro Vancouver Chapter in 2020. In addition to continuing to act as an Independent Witness, his involvement has included making public presentations on MAID and Advance Care Planning, writing media articles supporting end-of-life choice, and advocating for changes in MAID legislation with provincial and federal politicians.

Sherry Moran, a retired lawyer and federal government executive with extensive experience in developing policy and legislation while working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders. She has significant experience in developing and strengthening governance frameworks, both in government and through her work on Boards in the non-profit and charitable sector. Sherry is also proficient in advocating for change in government policy, laws, and regulations.
