Back in 2020, my father was in the fight of his life. He had previously been diagnosed with cancer, undergone chemotherapy, and tried all he could to continue living. He was the strongest man I’d ever seen, even to this day, but cancer began to win. He was faced with a choice: pass slowly, painfully, with no control, or to take it into his own hands and make the choice for himself.

Then he was found eligible for medical assistance in dying (MAID). I was 18 at the time; I had watched him in his early diagnosis as he fought the cancer with everything he had in his body, and I watched him undergo chemotherapy and surgeries.

In the very end, there was nothing else we could do. MAID was the most peaceful part, if I’m to be honest; it was painless, and it was fast. We were able to pick a date, November 19, 2020, at 11:00am. We all stood around him in the room, my mother, my sister and me. We all got to say goodbye, we all got to be there with him in his final moments. He passed away surrounded by family, comfortable, painlessly, and most importantly to him, on his own terms.

My family and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity of MAID. Nobody ever wants to make that tough decision, but in the end, it makes the world of difference. Thank you for all that you do.
