Advance requests for medical assistance in dying (MAID) have been studied, reviewed, and debated by experts, government committees, and the public.
Key checks and balances—including recommendations from the Special Joint Committee on MAID, extensive Health Canada consultations, and evidence-based reviews—have confirmed that allowing advance requests is a safe, compassionate, and necessary next step in end-of-life care for people across Canada.
All that’s needed for advance requests to be made legal is for the government to say “yes – let’s do it.” But that hasn’t happened yet.
And until the federal government listens to the 84% of people across Canada who support advance requests, individuals will continue to be at risk of having to endure years — perhaps even decades — of intolerable suffering.
