Valerie Fernandes has over seven years of experience in the non-profit sector in various roles across Canada, including working as a director of operations and a lawyer.
She also has experience working in government and political campaigns. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto in political science and equity studies and a Juris Doctor degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. She joined the right-to-die movement after the Supreme Court of Canada announced its judgment in the Carter v Canada case.
