Dr. Richard Mathias

Dr. Mathias serves as Professor Emeritus, SPPH UBC, having retired in March 2013.  Dr. Mathias has had extensive experience in evaluating public health issues for many years, including health outcomes.

Dr. Mathias graduated from the University of Alberta in 1968 with the degree of MD. He completed specialty training in Internal Medicine with a special concentration in infectious diseases in 1975, having trained at the University of Calgary and the University of Manitoba.

He then joined Health Canada as a Field Epidemiologist in Newfoundland in 1975 and in 1977 the Government of Saskatchewan as the Provincial Epidemiologist until 1980. In 1980 he presided as provincial epidemiologist in BC for communicable diseases. He then joined UBC in 1983 and achieved the rank of Professor in the School of Population and Public Health. Currently, Dr. Mathias serves as Professor Emeritus, SPPH UBC, having retired in March 2013.
